Behind The Scenes: Making The Dad's Day Ad

Earlier this year, I wrote this ad for Mitre 10.
Hours of meetings and filming and all sorts of other stuff went into making this 15 seconds of marvellously daggy fun.

For a donation, the St Kilda football club's cheersquad made us a few banners.

We needed a few banners so we could do more than one take of him busting through. First take worked perfectly.

It was a big studio...

But I found quickly it was best to watch the filming through this monitor.
Why?
To get a better view of what the ad would look like to viewers?
Of course not.
Because it was close to the catering.

It was a dubious proposition to get Brendan, the great actor (who usually does hoighty toighty stuff like Shakespeare and Neighbours), balanced on the child actors' shoulders.
But after cheating with a stepladder hidden behind....

WAHEY!

Here's a sticker which was stuck on the front window of all of Australia's Body Shops a few weeks ago.

Also recently I wrote a brochure for Suzuki.

My First Big Advertising Award!

Me and Adam Liddiard came third in The Age and MADC's Creative Raw Awards on Friday.

We beat all the big agencies.

When he announced our award, Clemenger BBDO/Melbourne Chairman, Ron Mather described our tagline, If it's not Dodoni, it's just wet cheese, for Dodoni Feta Cheese as "the best in the competition".

Each of Melbourne's big advertising agencies sent in one or two of their young creative teams to compete in the one day competition.

It was the first advertising award Adam and I have entered since finishing AWARD School last month.

The winners were a team from Marmalade and our mates at Grey Worldwide came second.

Big thanks to Nick and Michael at Singleton, Ogilvy & Mather for letting us represent their agency on the day.

I've just finished a temp spot at a state government department writing speeches and press releases for two high profile ministers.

You'll have to email me if you want to find out more.

I Get On The Wall

My radio ad got "on the wall" of best ads at AWARD School graduation night last week.

Getting into the country's most celebrated advertising course was tough enough.

My ad on the wall?

I'm thrilled.

Journalism, Copywriting and Creative Thinkin'

I'm your bloke.

Not for kissing and cuddling, I'm your bloke who will write up your stuff to make it noticed, enjoyed and remembered.

Since 1991, I've written for Black & White, The Age, Inpress, World Vision, Triple J , Beat, Interval, Zebra, Sadness Is In The Sky, Shock Records, Shirtfront, Forte, Planet and of course my blogs: The Nightwatchman, Victoria Park and But I Want An Interesting Job.

Also you may have heard me in the past few years talking up stoopid stuff on Myf Warhurst's Triple J lunchtime radio shift.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and International Relations from Deakin University, Advanced Copywriting at RMIT and recently was one of the nine invited students at the Fairfax AWARD Copy School.

So when your marketing department, no bugger that, the entire office comes back from lunch, all-staff email my details.
